What Dr. Mckee ND offers

Lifestyle Counselling

The personal goals you’ve set for yourself and your mental health are unique. As are the challenges you may be facing.

Therapy isn’t a “quick fix” or “one-size-fits-all” process. It’s an individual journey where you’re intentionally guided towards your goals, values and what matters most to you.

You can expect a safe space to freely explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours—from a place of curiosity instead of judgement. By doing so, you awaken to different views and insightful perspectives. We focus less on the problems and more on the solutions that will help bring positive change into your present and future.

In collaboration with you, we create a personalized plan that may include a combination of evidence-based practices. You’ll gain tangible skills to help you manage your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. These skills will allow you to become more confident in coping with obstacles, even after you’ve completed therapy.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is utilized by many naturopathic doctors because it has been around for thousands of years. True to TCM, Dr. McKee ND will use the body as a map of meridians, and based on your case and symptoms, an individualized set of points will be chosen for you.

Acupuncture is commonly used for the following concerns:

  • chronic and acute pain

  • neuropathy

  • hormonal issues

  • gastrointestinal concerns

  • insomnia

  • fertility support

  • anxiety/stress management

    and more!

Please note: For best results, acupuncture should be performed for a minimum of 1x/week for 6 weeks

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is the practice were special cups are used to decompress fascia. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscle. Mobility and muscle performance rely on healthy movement of fascia along the surface of muscle.

Cupping works by having a pump generate negative pressure within a cup. This creates a ‘lift’ of underlying soft tissue (facia and muscle) and allows for the cups to be moved along surface of body (sliding cupping) creating a massage-like effect. During sliding cupping, Dr. McKee ND assesses pliability of tissue. If she detects resistance or feels a ‘crunching’ sensation, that suggests adhesions between muscle and fascia and I will leave stationary cups in place for 15sec-2min. The degree of suction can be controlled so treatments can be gentle

Cupping doesn’t just physically help us, but also encourages and ignites multiple physiological responses. These include increases in circulation to soft tissue therefore improving oxygenation and nutrient delivery, lymphatic drainage, decompresses sensory nerve endings which aids in pain relief, as well as alleviates myofascial adhesions which is a cause of poor mobility and pain, and so many more!

Blood Work and Testing

In order to identify and treat some health symptoms, blood must be analyzed so that an in-depth analysis and be done. Updated blood work is very important. It provides information about your current health status and can help rule out conditions and processes that could be contributing to symptoms.

Dr. McKee ND also ensures that old and new blood work is gone over and the patient has a full understand of the test results. She also shares her findings and the test results with your NP or medical doctor if you request.

Dietary Counselling

Food is fuel, and the food we eat have such an incredible effect on our overall health. It is a cornerstone in all of Dr. McKee’s ND treatment plans for her patients. She meets the patient with where they’re at, so that changes can be implemented at their comfort level and readiness for change.

Based on presenting symptoms, conditions, or medications, Dr. McKee ND recommends specific foods for patients to add into their diet to support health, and potentially, foods that should be reduced or eliminated that may be contributing to symptoms and poor health. Dr. McKee ND approaches dietary health with the microbiome in mind - choosing specific foods and developing eating practices that support the growth of the "good" microbiota.

Updated blood work is encouraged to tailor dietary recommendations.

Nutritional Supplementation

Dr. McKee ND answers one of the most common questions: "What supplements should I take, if any?"

Dr. Mckee received extensive training in nutritional science. During the initial appointment an assessment will be made to look for:

  • signs of nutrient deficiencies in patients (which can be subtle)

  • nutrients that may be depleted by medications

  • nutrients that are needed in larger amounts during specific circumstances (ex. during pregnancy, puberty, post-injury, etc.),

  • nutrients to optimize health.

Dosage, supplement brand, and duration of use are also important factors that Dr. McKee ND pays close attention to. Whenever possible, she prefers to use food sources to achieve certain nutrient requirements in her patients. However, sometimes this is more difficult for patients or simply cannot be obtained through the diet and supplements are recommended.

Freuquently asked questions

  • No. Other health care providers may recommend the services of a Naturopathic Doctor, but a formal referral is not required.

  • The first appointment is all about getting to know each other, gathering a full health history, and determining next steps.  General advice is provided throughout this appointment, but the second appointment is where treatment options are discussed and the plan is put in place.

  • Yes. I understand not everyone wants to dive into a complete health assessment. For those just wanting cupping or acupuncture for specific symptom relief, I've created a shorter Initial appointment (45min) that will allow me to do a brief intake and provide treatment on that first visit.

  • It depends on what support you’re seeking, and is a personal preference. Generally, appointments are more frequent in the beginning, and as health outcomes improves, visits become less frequent- more like check-ups.
